Growing strawberries in Gaza

Farmers have been growing strawberries in Gaza Strip for generations, but not without challenges.

It is strawberry harvest time for farmers in Gaza, where tonnes of ripe strawberries are picked, with most heading to consumers in the occupied West Bank.

But the Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip means that process comes with many challenges.

Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker reports from Beit Lahiya, in the northern Gaza Strip, where she speaks with 82-year-old farmer Ahmad Shafai about the difficulties he faces daily.

“Israeli products compete with us, even in the West Bank” he tells us.
