Latin America: UN urges collaboration to prevent economic crisis

UN warns that poverty across the region will rise by 7 percent, an increase equivalent to 45 million people.

The United Nations secretary-general, Antonio Guterres, has warned that the coronavirus pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean will plunge millions of people into poverty.

Launching a policy brief on the future of the region, he added that 18 million people would lose their jobs, with the worst affected being women and Black and Indigenous communities.
