- More than 30 people have been killed and about 150 others wounded in a suspected suicide bombing targeting police officers at a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar.
- A spokesperson at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar says at least 32 people have been confirmed dead with more than 70 injured brought in for treatment. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
- Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack while ordering authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the victims. He promised “stern action” against those behind the attack.
- The mosque is situated in Peshawar’s Police Lines area, which is part of the city’s red zone where numerous important government installations are, including the Chief Minister House, Governor House, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly building.
Turkey condemns mosque attack
Ankara has condemned the attack on the mosque and extended condolences to the Pakistani people.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and injuries as a result of Monday’s terrorist act targeting a mosque in northwestern Peshawar city,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.
Mosque ‘nearly full’ at time of explosion
Peshawar’s police chief, Muhammad Ijaz Khan, says in a televised statement that the capacity of the main hall of the mosque was nearly 300 and it was “nearly full” at the time of the explosion.
“Efforts are being made to get them out safely,” he said.
Pakistan PM condemns bombing
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing in a statement and ordered authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the victims.
