It’s a wrap
After a frenzied 90 minutes of action, it is France who will meet Morocco on December 14 to decide who will feature in the final the following Sunday.
England now head back home, but they should do so with their heads held high, having pushed the current world champions the distance in this gripping encounter.
In the end, Les Bleus’s ability to produce a moment of brilliance out of thin air was the difference, and the Kane missed penalty will surely be talked about in the days to come.
We thank you for joining us today for this humdinger of a match, and before you do head off, make sure to check out our detailed match report.
The World Cup will now pause for a couple of days before action resumes when Argentina and Croatia face off for a spot in the final on December 13, so do make sure to join us for that one.

Jordan Henderson: ‘I thought we gave everything’
England midfielder Jordan Henderson had this to say after the match: “It’s difficult to find the right words. I thought we gave everything. [We were] disappointed to go one-nil down. I thought [our] character to keep going and find an equaliser was good.”
“We know how many penalties he [Harry Kane] has scored for us. How many goals he has contributed for us to get here. He will be stronger for it [the penalty miss] in the long run. He is a world-class striker and our captain.”
“We felt really good with our performances [in the tournament]. The hunger was really good. It, unfortunately, wasn’t our night, and [we have to] give credit to France as they are a good team.”
Heartbreak for England

Les Bleus celebrations
Full-time
With that last chance from Rashford, the whistle is soon blown and France go through to the World Cup semi-finals.
England provided a wonderful fightback, but in the end, the penalty miss from Kane will be discussed in the tabloids over days to come.
Les Bleus march on to the final four, where they will next face Morocco for a chance to reach the December 18 final.
Full-time: England 1-2 France
Rashford misses free-kick

He goes for a goal and almost scores, but the ball just goes over the crossbar.
Really good chance at that, but just not enough.

Giroud vs Kane
It had to be him. It was a classic Giroud header. France’s record goal scorer hasn’t had the best of service all night, but that was a real striker’s goal.
The Les Bleus’ fans at Al Bayt Stadium are on their feet waving the Tricolour, but then, but then, but then – a penalty or England?
And Harry Kane does not normally miss penalties.
There is absolute shock on the England fans’ faces. They have gone silent. Most are standing still.
Even the noisy drummer has gone missing.
Teams make changes
Prior to the penalty chance, Dembele had been subbed off for Kingsley Coman.
Soon after the penalty miss, England bring on Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling for Henderson and Saka.
86 mins: England 1-2 France
Penalty drama
After that effort from the usually reliable Harry Kane, you might like to read a bit more about penalties. Perhaps open it in another tab, and wait until after the game, though, eh?
Kane skies penalty chance
France fans go off in the stadium as Kane sends his attempt well over the bar.
Quite uncharacteristic for him, but perhaps the occasion got to him somewhat?

Penalty awarded to England
England are awarded their second penalty of the match.
England players want Hernandez to be sent off, but he is shown the yellow instead.
It was quite negligent from the defender on second viewing, and the Three Lions have an opportunity to tie things up once more.
Those hopes rest squarely on Kane’s shoulders.

VAR check for possible penalty
After Hernandez clatters into Mount inside of the box, there is a VAR check for a possible penalty.
