- The match at Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, kicked off at 9pm (19:00 GMT).
- Roma boss Jose Mourinho was denied a chance to make history by winning a record sixth European trophy.
- Sevilla had previously won six out of their six Europa League finals, making them the most successful side in the competition’s history — and Wednesday’s victory extended that streak to seven.
- Before Wednesday’s match, Sevilla won the only competitive match between the two sides when they beat Roma 2-0 to knock them out of the Europa League last 16 in 2020.

It wasn’t pretty
13 – There were 13 yellow cards awarded in the game between Sevilla (6) and Roma (7), the most ever in a UEFA Europa League game. Indeed, Roma's seven were the most for any side in a final in the competition. Grind. pic.twitter.com/DLcHIerVjo

Questions around Mourinho’s penalty lineup
A defensive midfielder and two centre-backs in his starting five – Mourinho’s choices for the penalty shootout are drawing scrutiny. Would he have been better off picking attackers like Wijnaldum and El Shaarawy to start the shootout?
Ah well. If they’d scored, we’d be calling him a genius. Penalty shootout analysis is so heavily skewed by hindsight.
There’s a first time for everything, Jose
Mourinho loses the first European final of his career. Will it turn out to be his last game as Roma manager?
Gonzalo Montiel: Ice-cold under pressure

Mendilibar reigns supreme
What a job the Sevilla coach has done in just 10 weeks. The only trophy Mendilibar had won until now was the Spanish Second Division title with Valladolid in 2007. He doesn’t even have a long-term contract at the club.
But I’ve got a feeling that’s going to change soon.
What a moment for José Luis Mendilibar. 62 years old. His European record, in full (forget that one Intertoto Cup game): knocked out Mancester United, knocked out Juventus, beat Roma on penalties.

That’s win number seven for Sevilla
Yes, you read right.
That is their seventh Europa League title. Their record of never losing a final in this tournament remains untouched. What is it about this club and this competition? They were at risk of being relegated from the La Liga at one point this season.
What a turnaround. What a story.
Roma players look in shock
Mancini is walking around the pitch with a dazed look on his face. It’s been an eventful final for him: He got the assist for Paulo Dybala’s goal, ripped his T-shirt, picked up a booking, scored an own goal and then missed a penalty in the shootout.
Dybala is sitting on the pitch, tears streaming down his face.
Such drama
Montiel had to retake his first attempt – which he missed – due to encroachment for Rui Patricio. He goes the other way the second time around and fires into the top corner. It sinks into the net.
The man who scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final does the same for Sevilla.
Sevilla win the Europa League
What an incredible finish!

Penalties
Extra time ends, and now the Europe League final will be decided on penalties.
Smalling hits the crossbar
Zalewski’s free kick was headed behind for a corner kick. He proceeds to take the corner and Chris Smalling’s looping header strikes the crossbar framing the top of the goal.

Mourinho in the thick of it
It took him long enough. The Roma coach has to be held back by his staff as he charges up to face off against Sevilla player Joan Jordan.
The fourth official intervenes and the flare-up ends with Mourinho and Jordan hugging it out.
