A thought for the Nigerians
Nigeria were increasingly looking like the most formidable team at the 2023 AFCON tournament.
As so many other pre-tournament favourites fell by the wayside, the Super Eagles were becoming the team tipped to claim the trophy.
Only one goal all tournament for Osimhen will be part of the inquest – was he given enough supply?
At the other end, it was a five-man defence. Should Nigeria have been more adventurous? We can only speculate now.
Maybe it's the end of the competition, but not the end of the story! 🧤

The Elephants weren’t haunted by their memories
Troost-Ekong’s goal was enough to separate the teams in the group stage but not in the final.
This time there was a way back for the Ivorians.

The Elephants rise above the Super Eagles to complete fairytale
Wild celebrations in the stands as the hosts claim a deserved third AFCON title!
Nigeria have only themselves to blame for simply not showing up today. They were made to pay for their lethargic performance.
It’s a sad end for the Super Eagles but a glorious one for the Elephants who rose from the dead to win their third AFCON title.
The magic of this tournament and the never-say-die attitude of Les Elephants completes a fairytale end to this tournament.
The stats
The Ivorians had a 62-38 share of possession and had 18 efforts on goal compared with the Nigerians’ five.
Eight of the Ivory Coast efforts were on target whereas Kessie’s goal was the only effort on target from Nigeria.
It was Ivory Coast’s game from the off
Nigeria were the favourites but Ivory Coast were the better team from start to finish.
It was the Super Eagles that took the lead through their captain Troost-Ekong but Kessie levelled before Haller sealed matters.
Haller’s story is complete
Never mind the turnaround in fortunes at the tournament for his side, from a cancer diagnosis in 2022 to the winning goal in the AFCON final for Sebastian Haller.
As hard as defeat will be for Nigeria, Haller’s moment is one to cherish for all.
