The Player of the Match – guess who?
A shutout after 120 minutes and four saves in five Cape Verde penalties – there could be only one player of the match…
🇿🇦 Ronwen Williams 🇿🇦
Heroic saves make him the TotalEnergies Man of the Match! 🧤#TotalEnergiesAFCON2023 | #CPVRSA | @Football2Gether pic.twitter.com/R6VsrGgOmu

Osimhen vs Williams will be some match-up
It’s Nigeria in the next round and not only Osimhen but Lookman will have a fair say as well, after his goalscoring feats in the last two rounds.

Four saves by Williams
That was some display of goalkeeping by the South African captain.

South Africa win as Williams saves again!
A fourth save by Williams from five penalties. Andrade is the latest to see his penalty saved.

Mvala scores
He goes to the left. It’s sudden death.

Teixeira scores
This one goes to the right and Williams goes with it but it’s in the corner and the Blues Sharks score for the first time.

Modiba misses
Down the middle but the keeper’s legs save the kick as he dives.

Williams makes a third save!
Duarte goes to his left and for the third time, Williams goes to his right and saves again.

The sub fires well over the bar. Three misses so far.

Cape Verde first and it’s Bebe
It’s saved!
He goes to the left and Williams follows him.
It’s a fantastic save.

South Africa:
It’s penalties
Bebe has two moments late on. One a run-through but he doesn’t find the pass to lay on for a striker.
The next is a long-range drive from all of 30 yards and left the bench livid.
Full-time (after extra time): Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Mokoena from range
That phrase is usually followed by something spectacular by the South African midfielder.
It’s reasonable contact but bounces through to the keeper for a comfortable save.
Teixeira comes on for Rocha for Cape Verde.
116 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Maseko injures a hamstring
He’s gone down in a lot of pain and is immediately replaced by Mashego.
South Africa have a corner in the meantime and, yes, you guessed it, overhit.
Neither side has been able to nail the set pieces in this game.
113 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
There have been 39 shots in total
Twenty-four of those are for Cape Verde but only two have been on target.
South Africa have managed 15 but have hit six on target.
There have been a lot of speculative efforts with neither side committing enough players forward would be my summary.
111 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Under way again
Can anyone find a way through or will it be penalties to decide matters?
106 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Half-time in extra time
Bebe swings a volley at the goal in the dying seconds but it was well wide.
Half-time in extra time: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
The corner is too deep again
It’s headed back into the box and the backline steps up to play South Africa offside.
Mudau also came off before the free kick for Lepasa.
104 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Free kick for South Africa
Bafana Bafana make a substitution first.
Makgopa comes off for Mobbie.
The free kick is bent in from the left and headed away for a corner
102 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Gilson in again
His pace takes him in behind the defence to receive a pass again.
He snatches at his shot though, which is dragged across the face of the goal.
98 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Bebe drills into the side netting
The forward shifts the ball to find space for the shot but it was always a tight angle.
96 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
Under way with a double save from Dias
Mayambela drives the goal from close range as the ball bounces free in the box from a cross.
Dias charges down the ball and makes himself big to block.
The ball comes straight back in from a cross and Makgopa heads down into the ground only for Dias to tip the bouncing bar over the bad.
Incredible keeping again in this game.
92 minutes: Cape Verde 0-0 South Africa
