This page is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) beat Delhi Capitals in a tense final of the 2024 cricket Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India on Sunday, March 17, 2024:
- RCB beat Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to win the Women’s Premier League 2024 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
- Ellyse Perry’s innings of 35 not out guided RCB’s chase of 113.
- Delhi Capitals collapsed after a bright start by captain Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma.
- RCB’s spin duo of Sophie Molineux and Shreyanka Patil took seven wickets between them.
It’s a wrap
What a final that was!
Delhi Capitals, after getting to a strong position of 64 for 0 after 7 overs, capitulated to 113 all out before their overs were through.
RCB didn’t start with a bang in the chase, but instead opted for the slow and steady approach.
Delhi Capitals would be pleased with how they took the game right to the end, but without enough wickets taken, they were unable to complete the unthinkable.
They are now two-time losing finalists, and will be even more determined next season to right the ship after putting in a fabulous performance throughout the season.
RCB, on the other hand, will bask in the glow of a maiden title, which will readily be appreciated by their male counterparts as they look to achieve the same when IPL 2024 kicks off on March 22.
We hope you enjoyed our coverage of today’s match, and till the next time, this is Rohan Sharma signing off for Al Jazeera.

‘For RCB as a franchise, to win this one is really special for me’
Victorious RCB captain Smriti Mandhana provided her thoughts: “Feeling hasn’t still sunk in. Hard for me to come out with expressions at the moment. One thing I’ll say is I’m proud of this bunch.”
“Our Bangalore leg was really good. We came to Delhi and had two tough losses. That’s what we spoke about and that we need to step up at the right time,” she said.
“These tournaments are about peaking at the right time. Last year taught us a lot of things. What went wrong, what went right. Management just said this is your team, build it [your way]. Thumbs-up to them.”
“For RCB, it is a lot more. I am not the only one who won this trophy; the team won the trophy. For RCB as a franchise, to win this one is really special for me. It hasn’t quite sunk in yet. This win is definitely one of the top five maybe. Obviously, a World Cup would top it.”
‘As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen’
Delhi Capitals skipper Meg Lanning shares her views at the post-match presentation: “Obviously disappointing not to get it done [tonight]. Finals are about playing well on the day.”
“Congratulations to RCB, you outplayed us tonight. It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen,” she said.
“Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win. We did a lot right [in this tournament]. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Cricket is a funny game. You win some, you lose some.
Perry awarded Orange Cap
After scoring 347 runs in the tournament, Perry receives the WPL 2024 Orange Cap.
Shreyanka awarded Purple Cap
For taking a tournament-leading 13 wickets, Shreyanka Patil is awarded the WPL 2024 Purple Cap.
Molineux is Player of the Match
Sophie Molineux, for taking 3 for 20, is adjudged Player of the Match. “It was a great match. Finals are always funny games. We sort of knew it would go down the wire,” she said.
“Delhi were a great team throughout the season. Pretty happy to get over the line here.”
“I felt like I was bowling really slow tonight. You have to keep learning from the mistakes you made before.”

‘This is on another level for us and women’s cricket’
Perry, who finished unbeaten on 35 off 37 balls, had this to say after the match: “It is pretty bonkers, to be honest. This is on another level for us and women’s cricket. All the support the teams have had [throughout this tournament] has been phenomenal. It has been so much fun to play.”
“She [Ghosh] is unbelievable. For such a young player, she has all the shots. She had the belief and calmness out there. We crawled to the target, but we put away the loose balls where possible. It should not have been such a close game,” she said.
“She [Shreyanka Patil] turned the match on its head. For the rest of the spinners to back her up the way they did was special. For such a young person, she has the world at her feet.”

Ghosh takes RCB home!
With a tonk over deep extra cover to find the boundary, Ghosh has secured a maiden WPL title for RCB!
It sets off wild scenes from the RCB dugout as they rush out to greet the heroes of the night.
Commiserations to Delhi Capitals for managing to take this chase right to the final over, despite the subpar target they posted.
Two runs off the first two deliveries
The batters are looking for the boundary, but instead find the boundary riders.
Three needed off four now.
19 overs. RCB 109-2
Perry tries to find the deep fine leg boundary off the final ball, but instead finds the fielder stationed at short fine leg.
RCB now need five from six deliveries. All bets are off at this point.
Could we be in for a potential Super Over in the WPL 2024 final?
Review for LBW. RCB need 5 off 6
Perry misses a delivery on middle and leg from Capsey.
The ball wraps the top of her left pad and Capsey appeals, but the umpire appears unmoved.
Lanning decides to review it anyways.
Replays confirm no bat or glove involved.
Ball tracking shows it would go on to miss the stumps, so Perry survives.
Perry finds the boundary! RCB need 7 off 10
The slanting delivery on the pads is enough for Perry to paddle one fine down the leg side.
She puts enough on it to beat the boundary rider converging from long leg.
18 overs. RCB 103-2. RCB need 11 off 12
RCB are on the precipice of securing a first title for the franchise.
They require 11 off 12, but any dot balls from here will really pile on the pressure.
Capsey replaces Mani.
Perry picks up four with pull!
Just a touch short from Jonassen, who is back into the attack.
Perry gets back and pulls through square leg to beat the boundary rider to the rope.
17 overs. RCB 95-2
Rodrigues saves a certain boundary off the last ball at fine leg with a wonderful dive.
The over ends with RCB needing 19 off 18.
This game looks set to go down to the wire.
Ghosh finds the boundary!
Mani continues from her end.
She gives up just the two singles before allowing Ghosh precious width on the off side.
The wicketkeeper obliges with a cut through the gap at cover to pick up four valuable runs.
16 overs. RCB 86-2
Perry regains her Orange Cap from Lanning.
But Capsey will enjoy the fact that just four runs come off the over.
RCB need 28 off 24 to win.
The partisan crowd sense something special could be happening here, and if RCB don’t get a move on, they could very well manifest it.
Capsey back on
Ghosh is the new batter with her side in a slightly precarious situation.
They would still be favourites to win this, but stranger things have occurred.
WICKET! Mandhana caught! RCB 82-2
Perry almost finds the boundary at deep mid-wicket, but Pandey throws herself behind the ball to cut it off.
Mandhana, looking to up the ante, goes for the big hoick down the leg side, but instead top-edges a chance at mid-on to Reddy, who takes the catch comfortably.
This is just what the doctor ordered if you are a Delhi Capitals fan as Mandhana was well set and in position to see off this chase.
