In Pictures: Brazil-Argentina rivalry

As Argentinian football fans arrive in Brazil to support their team, the long-standing rivalry with the host team grows.

Thousands of Argentinian football fans travelled to Brasilia to see La Albiceleste (the white and sky blue) in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Although Argentina played against Belgium (and won 1-0), the match was also attended by thousands of Brazilians who rooted against their old football rival, Argentina.

About 60,000 Argentinian football fans descended on Brazil’s capital Brasilia on Saturday to see their team reach the quarter-final. Although the match was between Argentina and Belgium, there were thousands or Brazilians in the stadiums rooting against their old football rival, Argentina.

Argentinian fans have adopted a new anthem during this World Cup, in which they taunt their Brazilian football rivals. The song has caused a stir in Brazilian media and has sparked several counter songs from Brazilian fans.

Many Brazilian fans at the Argentina vs. Belgium game in Brasilia went to great lengths to support Belgium against their great football rivals.

Argentinian fans said they hoped their team would meet Brazil in the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro(***)s Maracana on Sunday, saying a match between the South American giants would be the ultimate climax of the tournament.

Despite the animosity between the Brazilian and Argentinian fans, it remained calm around the stadium in Brasilia.
Argentinian fans will now travel to Sao Paulo to attend the match against the Netherlands in the semi-finals. Police in Sao Paulo expected about 100,000 Argentinians would visit the city on Wednesday.
