Traditional herders’ livelihoods under threat as harsh winter takes its toll.

A slow natural disaster is taking its toll on Mongolia’s herders, killing thousands of livestock and putting livelihoods at risk.

The phenomenon is known as the Dzud – a severe summer drought followed by an extra harsh winter.

With heavy snows covering up already sparse grazing land, millions of animals have perished.
