Faroe Islands challenge EU fishing sanctions

The Faroe Islands are entrenched in what is being called “the Mackerel wars”.

The self-governing islands within the Danish Kingdom, almost totally dependent on fishing, are challenging EU-imposed sanctions on the industry.

“We are not the pirates of the North Atlantic,” Faroese Prime Minister Kaj Leo Johannesen said. 

“We have been living on fish resources the last 150 years. This is our bread, our fish in our area. The EU will not decide what we do in our waters.”
