Inside Story

Can the Quad effectively counter China’s influence?

Australia, India, Japan and the United States held a summit to discuss Beijing’s rising power.

“A free and open Indo-Pacific.”

That was the promise after the first summit between the leaders of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.

The so-called Quad group agreed to cooperate on the coronavirus pandemic, climate change and security.

Although China was not mentioned in the final communique, it became clear Beijing’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region was driving the discussions.

The summit voiced support for the rule of law, democratic values and a region unconstrained by coercion. So what can the four nations achieve?
