Can Fumio Kishida overcome Japan’s challenges?

Fumio Kishida was picked by veteran party members and criticised for being old school.

Now, the former foreign minister is leading Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and is set to become prime minister.

Kishida was seen as a safe choice for the LDP for the general elections scheduled to take place in November.

He was challenged with leading the party to victory after its popularity declined.

Kishida has pledged to counter China’s growing influence and promised to narrow Japan’s income inequality gap.

But will he succeed?
