Nigeria corruption slammed with #LifeAfterReturningStolenPublicFunds

Wealthy children of government employees shamed online as Buhari takes charge.

As Nigeria’s new president Muhammadu Buhari takes the reins of government, many are hoping for a renewed war against corruption with #LifeAfterReturningStolenPublicFunds. Poking fun at what many say are the extravagant lifestyles of children of corrupt officials, many imagined their future without the personal use of public funds.

Some speculate the hashtag started when Petroleum Minister Alison-Madueke, whom some link to “financial recklessness and obscene lifestyle”, was spotted allegedly looking humbled and seeking favours at a former president’s house.

After her picture circulated, Nigerians used humourous images and tweets to discuss the future of the children of wealthy and corrupt officials.
